Imagine a nation in which, during a protest, the murder of a young woman by vehicle, driven by a racist/fascist, galvanizes the population (against their own president’s tendencies) to resist fascism and racism. Imagine a nation in which a young man is beaten senseless during that same protest in a parking garage next to the police station by a gang of racists and fascists, and the president will condemn “violence on many sides” the next day.
What have we here? Because the woman has become a martyr for the restoration of American values and resistance to racism and the man is barely mentioned at the time and utterly forgotten in a few days. Because the woman was white and the man was black. If it had only been the man’s beating there wouldn’t be this massive kerfuffle over racism and fascism, but a white woman was killed, and you know how we value our women once they’re dead. There is no hypocrisy here, no double standard. There’s only one standard, shared by main stream media and fascists alike: some lives really don’t matter.
